Carnival 2026 in Playa de Aro will take place from 12 to 18 February.

This carnival is nowadays one of the most important in Spain and has been celebrated for more than 40 years, taking inspiration from the carnival in the Swiss city of Lucerne.

The traditional Carnival calendar is between Maundy Thursday and Ash Wednesday, but the celebration in Playa de Aro is usually brought forward to the previous weekend and features the Carnestoltes ('Carnival' in Catalan) Queen and King, who preside over the different events of the festivities.

During Carnival in Platja d'Aro, the agenda will be packed with activities for everyone. Here are some of the most eagerly awaited events:

• Presentation of the "colles". At this event all the "colles" or groups participating in the Carnival are presented to the public. This is the starting point for the festivities, with performances and dancing. 
• Children's parade in S'Agaró, about 7 minutes by car from Platja d'Aro. 
• Presentation of the King and Queen of Carnival.
• Proclamation of the Kings of Carnival in the Platja d'Aro Town Hall square, followed by a popular aperitif.
• Great Procession of Floats and Comparsas. The most impressive event of the Carnival in Platja d'Aro.
• Rúa of local "colles" in Castell d'Aro. Sunday, 19 February at 12h.
• Burial of the Sardine, which bids farewell to the costumes until the following year with a popular sardinada (a meal consisting of sardines).

With the participation of more than 4,000 extras and 65 colles, this is the most eagerly awaited event of the Costa Brava carnivals. The participants parade to the beat of musical bands from all over Catalonia and Europe and compete with their costumes, dances, floats, sympathy... to win prizes and have fun with the audience.

The parade of Floats and Comparsas will be held on Saturday 14 February. This year's prizes are worth 8,000 euros for the first five winners in five categories: Large Float, Small Float, Comparsa, Costume and Local Colles; and, a single prize for the Best Debutant Colla.

To get more and more people to join the party, the programme of shows, parades and other activities of the Platja d'Aro Carnival is completely free for everyone to participate.

The Platja d'Aro Carnival is undoubtedly the most famous on the Costa Brava, but it is not the only one. We recommend others that are very close to our hotel:

• Palamós. Palamós -a 14-minute drive from Platja d'Aro- was one of the first towns on the Costa Brava to celebrate Carnival. The main days are concentrated over the weekend: on Saturday, with a large rúa in the afternoon and a dance in the evening, and on Sunday, with an exhibition of troupes.
• Tossa de Mar. Along with Blanes and Lloret de Mar, Tossa - a 30-minute drive from Playa de Aro - is part of the Costa Brava's Southern Carnivals. As a special feature, some years they organise cooking competitions.
• L'Escala. At the Carnival of l'Escala - a 45-minute drive from Playa de Aro - the Farandola dance is a highlight. A kind of conga in the form of a chain that is great fun for both adults and children. A festival with plenty of colour and activities for all the family.
